Piñol turns over assistance to fisherfolk, farmers affected by 'Yolanda'

SAN JOSE De BUENAVISTA, Antique, March 17 (PNA) -– Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol wrapped up Friday his three-day visit in Western Visayas to distribute assistance to fisherfolk and farmers affected by supertyphoon "Yolanda" in 2013.

Nicolasito Calawag, Antique provincial agriculture afficer and the beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the assistance given to them by the Department of Agriculture (DA). Piñol turned over last Wednesday 60 motorized boats made of fiber glass and two units of rainwater harvester to fisherfolk in Culasi in northern Antique. He also distributed four units of rainwater harvester in far-flung Caluya town in the province.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) conceptualized the rainwater harvester in order to support the sustainability of the livelihood of the fisherfolk, particularly those in far-flung communities.

The municipalities of Libertad, Tobias Fornier and Anini-y each received two units of "payao" or fish aggregating device, which is normally deployed to support or sustain fishing operations. Payao is one of the major BFAR interventions in the fishing industry.

Piñol also vowed an additional 50 fiber glass boats to the municipality of Sebaste, amounting to PHP50,000 each. The DA secretary also distributed PHP15 million worth of machineries and equipment to farmers of Antique in the same occasion.

Piñol said that the DA and the BFAR, through the distribution of the fiber boats and other equipment, are now “providing answers to the problems” of fisherfolks and farmers. He also urged the fisherfolks to just let DA and BFAR know what their needs are so that they could be assisted in their livelihood. (PNA) JMC/BS/AJP/AMBARCEBAL/KVB
