Antique Football Team’s Historic Feat

Third, fourth, fifth, last or worse, no participation.

On previous WVRAA Meets, either of these were the standings of the Antique Football Team Secondary Level, reason that the team was in high morale after learning they will be able to have a shot at the much coveted Regional Gold against Football Powerhouse- Iloilo.

“This is the first Championship Match Team Antique had in many many years.” Said Mr. Joseph Alejandrino, Coach of this year’s Team who also confessed it is the first regional championship match he had in all of his coaching career.

But as the game unfolded, Team Iloilo was seen ultimately superior in their ball handling, team coordination and speed, a factor Antique was unable to pacify given only their more than a month preparation for the actual Meet.

Defeating Aklan and Capiz in the eliminations, Antique played against Iloilo’s pride, the Barotac Nuevo Team who brags that their town is synonymous to football, having year round trainings for their athletes, various national and international exposures plus the “Azkals” Philippine Team Factor.

After bagging second this year, the coach and trainers of Team Antique expressed that after this year’s unexpected Silver Medal, they will be preparing next year and improve their stand against Barotac Nuevos Team.

Meanwhile, Jan Rey Salazar, playing for Team Antique was initially drafted by Iloilo’s coach to join the team to represent Region Six in the upcoming Palarong Pambansa to be held later this year in Albay.
